Installing KDE Desktop on Ubuntu 10.10

Login in to KDE Desktop Session

Logout from the current login session.At the login prompt choose your username,enter password and select Desktop as KDE at the bottom Right Menu.Then login as usual..Then you will be able to enjoy Ubuntu 10.10 with KDE.

#1. To install TLF,first extract the downloaded(Link is given above ) package(*.bz2(how to extract rar/bz2 in Ubuntu)) by using commands or in GUI mode.(Assuming that you have installed all the dependencies as described in Requirements,if not then first install those dependencies from package manager(e.g from synaptic package manager in ubuntu 10.04/9.10 or earlier))

tar -jxpf *.tar.bz2     //for extracting archive file

#2. Then go to the directory where you see file(script),and run the command –

sudo ./

then enter your login password .Wait…for the installation to complete.

After completing the installation procedure of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx,I had finished installation of some Ubuntu extras like Adobe Flash,VLC,Google Chrome ..and so on.Then I searched for my favorite C++ IDE – KDevelop but it wasn’t there either in Ubuntu software center or  Synaptic Package Manager.Then how can we install KDevelop on Ubuntu 10.04,well it’s very simple and how?that’s the purposes of this post.Later I found that KDevelop can be installed in three simple steps by changing Repository settings in SPM.

#1. Open Synaptic Package Manager and click on ‘Settings->Repositories’.A new window (named as software sources) will open,then click on tab which says ‘Updates’ and check the box for ‘Unsupported updates'(close the current window).

#2. Now click on Reload(Since repository settings have changed) to update the software listings and search for ‘kdevelop’;then mark the packages for installation and finally click on Apply(click OK if it asks for dependent libraries/API) to install KDevelop.

#3. Wait…….for few moments until the installation is completed.That’s All! Open kdevelop from Applications->Programming->KDevelop and Enjoy the FUN! of programming.

How to install GNOME Desktop in Kubuntu 10.04

Kubuntu 10.04 is nothing but the combination of Ubuntu 10.04 and KDE desktop.So application programs or software packages that are installed bydefault is based on kde desktop package.But all other internal structure except some default applications and desktop,kubuntu 10.04 and ubuntu are same.So if you are using kde then you can also install gnome desktop on your computer along with the kde desktop in parallel.Not only desktop you can also use GNOME applications like Gedit(Gnome desktop text editor) or Nautilus(File browser) although KDE has already its own text editor Kwrite and file manager Dolphin.Although KDE is little slower than GNOME desktop but its look is little more pleasant and eye friendly than other desktop such as GNOME or XFCE.

#1.Go to Synaptic Package Manager(If you haven’t install the synaptic package Manager then first install it by using the command – sudo aptitude –without-recommends install synaptic in the terminal/shell) and Search for GNOME.Gnome version 2.30 is the latest stable version and you can install it.First check the box for installation and then click on apply changes to begin the download and installation process.
#2.Now this is the time to wait until the download completes and then installation will begin automatically.It may take few minutes to complete the installation process.
#3.Now you should logout(or restart the computer if it asks) from the current session and at the Kubuntu 10.04 login prompt choose Desktop session as GNOME.Select your user account and Enter your password.
#4.Now you will logged in to GNOME desktop session…Enjoy GNOME!
