If you have any problem in installing Google Earth in Ubuntu 10.04(Lucid Lynx) then this post will solve the problem..it’s very easy …and will take less than a minute(Excluding Downloading Time).Just follow the steps given below.
Google Earth is a desktop applications which has derived features from Google Map,and of-course developed and maintained by Google.By Using Google Earth you can visualize the earth in 3D mode,and it allows you to interactively navigate satellite imagery,maps,terrain and other things.The other important features is that you can search for a location,find a path from one point to other.The zooming effect(Requires 3D acceleration and High Bandwidth Internet Connection) is really very good.Actually Debian packages which supports well with Ubuntu,aren’t available instead you have to install it from *.bin package,provided by Google for Linux Platform.
How to install Google Earth in Ubuntu 10.04 – Lucid Lynx
#1 : Download the binary package,’GoogleEarthLinux.bin’ for Linux/Ubuntu from the official website.
Download Google Earth
#2 : Open Terminal(CTRL+ALT+T),go(Use CD Command) to the directory where you have saved the downloaded file and make the bin file executable by typing the command –
$ chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin
#3 : Next,begin the installation by typing the command(followed by a single click on Install)
#4 : After completing the installation procedure successfully,you will notice a desktop shortcut/launcher for Google Earth.If you will double click on it then,it will start the application(Google Earth);but you may have to change it’s permission(If any error occurs).If so then run the command(Don’t forget to change the directory,if needed) –
$ chmod +x Google-googleearth.desktop
Alternative Method : Open Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager and search for “google earth” and select the package to install.It should also work.Try it and send me your feedback through comments.
Install Firefox 4 by using Synaptic Package Manager(SPM)
#1. Open SPM and Click on Settings -> Repositories ->Other Software.
#2. Then,click on +Add(Left,bottom) and enter the following address in APT Line (followed by single Add Source)
#3. Next,close the software sources window and Update the package information by clicking on Reload button(In SPM).
#4. Now,Search for ‘firefox 4’ and mark the package for installation which says – ‘firefox 4.0’.(If it asks for other dependencies then click ok)
#5. Then,click on ‘Apply’ to install firefox 4 beta.Within few minutes the installation will complete.Then go to Applications->Internet->Minefield 4.0 Web Browser(Why Minefield ?? Yeah!! This the code name for experimental version of Mozilla ..for Linux platform).
#6. That’s All…
Installing firefox 4 beta 3 from Command Line
Open Terminal(CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the commands given below
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0

Epic Web browser has just released – on July 15,2010.Epic is powered by Firefox.Epic came with a lot of exciting features.

Currently Epic is available for Windows only(*.exe) but it’s clearly indicated on the official website(of Epic) that – Epic for Linux and Mac is under development.So we will have to wait for the Epic’s Release -Debian Executable(*.deb) for Ubuntu.

Using Command Line/Terminal
Just Type the following command at ubuntu terminal(Hit CTRL+ALT+T to open terminal) and enter the login password.
$ sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5
Using Synaptic Package Manager
1.Go to Synaptic Package Manager and search for php.
2.Check the boxes corresponding to the package/module you want to install.
3.Click on Apply to begin the download.It will take few minutes to complete.
4.After completion of download,installation will begin automatically and hardly takes a minutes.(You may have to provide extra details e.g if you want to connect it through MySQL database).
Eclipse is one of the most widely used IDE(Integrated Development Environment),specially used for C/c++ and java programming.Since it is open source and available free of cost,you can install it on ubuntu 10.04 from it’s official package repositories or go to software center and Go to developer section.In developer section there is sub section IDE’s you will get eclipse listed there.Just click to install them.The more detailed explanation of the installation procedure is given below.It has very user friendly and simple graphical user interface with lot of features.Another more important point is that,you can extends its functionality by using plugins.

From Ubuntu Shell
1.Open terminal by hitting CTRL+ALT+T or from Applications->accessories->Terminal.
2.Type the command written below,you may have to enter your user account password to install the Eclipse.
$ sudo apt-get install eclipse
3.Downloading and installation process will finish soon.
4.That’s all Now,enjoy using eclipse.Access it from Applications->Programming->Eclipse.
From Ubuntu Software Center(USC) OR Synaptic Package Manager(SPM)
1.Open USC(Applications->Ubuntu Software Center) or SPM(System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager).
2.Search for Eclipse and Mark/Check the box for installation and click apply OR click on install(In USC under developer>IDE’s) to begin the downloading and installation process.
3.It will take few minutes to complete.
4.Now access eclipse from Applications->programming->Eclipse.
