GIMP is a powerful image editor application specially used for creating images and editing photographs.It is an open source and free software provided by GNU ,and good substitute for another popular Image editing software Adobe Photoshop.GIMP is a crossplatform application i.e it is available for all major operating systems like Linux based OS(Ubuntu,Fedora..) and Windows.Additional plugins are also available for GIMP to extend its features.It has all the necessary features like other image processing programs.In Ubuntu 10.04 you can install it in many ways either from ubuntu shell or package manager or you can manually download(debian package) it from its website(Although that is not recommended for ubuntu 10.04 users) to install.
Installing GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program) in Ubuntu 10.04
From Ubuntu Terminal
1.Open terminal(hit CTRL+ALT+T or Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
2.Use the following command to install GIMP;It may ask you to enter sudo password then enter your login(Ubuntu 10.04 Account) password.
$ sudo apt-get install gimp
3.Wait for downloading and installation to complete.It may take few minutes.
4.That’s all.. now,you can access GIMP from Applications->Graphics->GIMP Image Editor.
From Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager(SPM)
1.Open Ubuntu software Center or SPM and search for gimp.
2.Then click to install(Software Center) or mark it for installation(SPM) and then apply to install.
3.Wait until the download will finish and installation will begin automatically.Within few minutes installation process will also complete.
4.To Run GIMP,Go to Applications->Graphics->GIMP Image Editor.

Installing VLC Player in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
By Using Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager
1. Open SPM(Synaptic Package Manager)(Administration->Synaptic Package Manager) or Ubuntu Software Center(Applications) and Search for vlc player.
2.Check the the box to install and apply(Required in SPM).
3.Downloading and installation will complete within few minutes.
By Using Ubuntu Terminal

1.You can install the GTK+ libraries from Synaptic Package Manager.Open Synaptic Package Manager.
2.Search for GTK+,then select the libraries you want e.g libgtk 2.0-dev.. then mark for installation.
3.Now you can click on Apply to install the selected libraries or packages.
4.It will take few minutes to download and install the GTK+ library-packages.Wait until the installation will complete.
JAVA is now the most widely used programming language for creating applications for web,gadgets,business…So you may want to install JRE(Java Runtime Environment) on your ubuntu 10.04 LTS for compiling and running JAVA based application.
Installing JDK through Command Line in Ubuntu 10.04
Use the following command to install JDK(Java Developement Kit) 6 on your Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk
It will automatically install other dependencies.
Install JAVA(JDK-JRE) from SPM(Synaptic Package Manager) in Ubuntu 10.04
First,search for JDK/java and select the package openjdk-6-jdk by marking for installation.It will ask you to mark some extra dependent softwares for installation,just click ok.Then click on Apply to start the download and installation process.Wait for few minutes until the downloading process will complete and installation will begin.JDK will be installed within few moments.In middle of the installation it will ask you to accept license terms for JRE,check the box to accept the license terms.You are now ready to use Java Development Kit(JDK) for creating java applications.

Using MySQL in Ubuntu 10.04
To access Mysql server you can use following command in the linux terminal.
General format of the command
mysql -u user -h host -p (After hitting enter it will ask for mysql user’s password)
Running as localhost
mysql -u root -h localhost -p (Enter the root password that you entered at the time of installation)
You can also install MySQL query browser(From Ubuntu Software Center) to make this process more simple.
