Installing Apache on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Open Terminal(hit CTRL+ALT+T) and type the following command(s) ..followed by your ubuntu login password.

$ sudo apt-get install apache2

[sudo] password for user:

Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
python-docky libmono-getoptions2.0-cil
Use ‘apt-get autoremove’ to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:
apache2-mpm-worker apache2.2-bin apache2.2-common libaprutil1-dbd-sqlite3

and the installation procedure will complete within a minute.
After installing Apache on Ubuntu 10.04 lucid Lynx,you can verify whether it is installed properly or not.The files that is in the directory File System->var->www can be accessed as server.If you will type following address in your browser address bar –


Then you will see –

It works!

This is the default web page for this server.

The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.

NOTE : You can also install apache from Synaptic Package Manager(SPM).Just search for ‘apache’ and select the package from result,then click on apply to install.Another and more common way to install apache is to install it together with PHP and Mysql ..in LAMP.

This post will explain you – about installing Firefox 4 beta 3 on ubuntu 10.04(Lucid Lynx) by using Synaptic Package Manager and command line.For Linux based platform firefox has released Mindfield Web Browser,as experimental version of firefox 4 beta 3.I think it’s pretty fast than it’s older version due to the hybrid javascript engine – JagerMonkey.

Install Firefox 4 by using Synaptic Package Manager(SPM)

#1. Open SPM and Click on Settings -> Repositories ->Other Software.
#2. Then,click on +Add(Left,bottom) and enter the following address in APT Line (followed by single Add Source)
#3. Next,close the software sources window and Update the package information by clicking on Reload button(In SPM).

#4. Now,Search for ‘firefox 4’ and mark the package for installation which says – ‘firefox 4.0’.(If it asks for other dependencies then click ok)

#5. Then,click on ‘Apply’ to install firefox 4 beta.Within few minutes the installation will complete.Then go to Applications->Internet->Minefield 4.0 Web Browser(Why Minefield ?? Yeah!! This the code name for experimental version of Mozilla ..for Linux platform).

#6. That’s All…

Open Terminal(CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the commands given below

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0

Install Fluxbox in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

In Ubuntu 10.04(Lucid Lynx) LTS,you can install fluxbox window manager either from Synaptic Package Manager/ubuntu software center or Command Line/terminal/shell.Both of the methods are explained here

Installing fluxbox from Synaptic Package Manager

#1. Open Synaptic Package Manager(Go to System->Administration->SPM) and search for ‘fluxbox’.

#2. Check the small rectangular box(Select the fluxbox package),then click on Apply to begin installation of the selected package.

#3. After few minutes,the installation would be complete..then logout from the current session ..and choose fluxbox from the drop down menu at login prompt to run fluxbox with Ubuntu 10.04.

#4. That’s All..

Run the command(given below) at terminal(CTRL+ALT+T) and read the step 3 for logging into fluxbox desktop.

$ sudo apt-get install fluxbox
