How to install VLC Media Player on Ubuntu 12.04

VLC is the most popular ‘free and open source’ media player. Since, VLC can play a variety of formats – it’s recommended to have it on a GNU/Linux distributions. VLC is simple and easy to use and it has a lot of features – for simple users as well as for advanced users.

In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (precise pangolin), a media player is installed by default but you can’t expect the default media player to play all kind of popular multimedia formats. So the VLC i.e All In One music player is required! VLC 2.0 is the latest stable release, which is already there by default, in Ubuntu 12.04 package repository.

Installing VLC on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Open Ubuntu Software Center and search for VLC and install it in a couple if click, or you may use Synaptic Package Manager (if you prefer package manager over software center, but you will have to install it first because it’s no longer a default application in Ubuntu).

Or you could install it in one command (open a terminal : Ctrl+Alt+t) –

sudo apt-get install vlc

VLC 2.0 for Ubuntu 11.10

VLC Media Player version 2.0 (Twoflower) is out, with a bunch of cool features and changes. It’s one of the major release, after a long time. Now, VLC can decode videos more faster, it supports more open formats and Higher quality videos – some interfaces (Web and Mac) has been written from scratch.

According to Ubuntu Release plan – you won’t get the latest version of VLC Media player i.e vlc 2.0 by default on older/current stable version of Ubuntu i.e in 11.10/10.10 etc (Although in 12.04 LTS, it will be there in the official package repository). So if you want to try VLC 2.0 then either install from source which may be very annoying due to some weird dependencies or use a PPA (that’s what you’re going to do).

Fire up a terminal (hit Ctrl+Alt+t) and execute the following commands –

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

VLC Player is one of the most popular open source (released under GPL) and free media player (encoder). Ubuntu 11.10 (code name : oneiric ocelot)- has banshee installed as the default media player. So if you want to play a video file then you need to install VLC – all in one media player. it has lot of advanced features. VLC has been the part of videoLAN project. VLC is good not only in playing files from your hard disk but also from your DVD/CD, network streams, capture cards. One of the best thing about vlc is that – it’s cross-platform and available not only for Linux based operating systems such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, OpenSuse but also for Mac OS X , Windows (vlc for android is under development – soon, you will be able to enjoy vlc on android too).

vlc isn’t installed by default on Ubuntu 11.10, but it’s available in official package repository so it’s very easy to install it. You can use Ubuntu Software Center (it’s one of the most popular Application in software center – rated as 5 star (out of 5)) or terminal, But in order to play any mp3 files or a video file such as avi, flv etc you would have to install some restricted plugins/codecs. libdvdcss library is required if you want to play encrypted DVD’s (most proprietary dvd uses CSS(content scramble system)). The latest version for Ubuntu/Linux is vlc vs 1.1.11.

Installing VLC Media Player on Ubuntu 11.10

Open Terminal and execute the following command(s)-

sudo apt-get install vlc

Now, you’re recommended to install ubuntu restricted extras and other libraries/codecs/plugins to start playing media files (audio/video..)

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Then, install libdvdcss2 for playing encrypted DVD’s

sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

[ If you’re getting any dependencies problem then run sudo apt-get -f install  ]

Now you’re ready to enjoy music/movies with VLC player – just right click on media and select ‘open with vlc media player’. That’s All.

Ubuntu 11.04 (alias : Natty Narwhal) was released(stable/final version) around a week ago and now it’s the time to install some great and cool applications that you need in your daily life. In this post, I’ll write about few best ‘free and open source’ music player (both Audio and Video) that you may want to try on Ubuntu 11.04 for great music experience.

In fact every music lovers, those who uses Ubuntu 11.04 (or older versions like 10.10 or 10.04; or may be other Linux Distributions, then also this article will help you because the apps I’m going to write about, is platform independent and surely available for most common Linux distros like Linux Mint, Fedora, Debian, OpenSuse..and of course Ubuntu!), uses these applications to play music on Ubuntu (or other platform if it’s a cross-platform apps). From Ubuntu Software Center

#1 : Open Ubuntu Software Center (go to menu located at Top Left corner and search for ‘ubuntu software center’ ).

From Command Line
