Ubuntu 12.04 LTS has some cool applications installed by default but just after a fresh installation – you need to install additional drives for the devices and printer is one of them. Although, Drivers are available for almost all popular printers – specially for Canon and HP printers. A simple printing application is installed by default but it won’t do anything unless you specified the required drivers.

Here is the simple step by step instruction on installing a printer software on Ubuntu 12.04, although I’ve explained it using a Canon printer (Pixma MP 280 series) but the process should be same for any kind of printer.

step #1. Connect the printer to computer (usually through a USB port) and switch on the printer.

step #2. Now, click on System Settings -> Printing -> Add

add-printer

Then, follow the instructions – your printer will be automatically detected and you just need to follow the on screen instruction to setup the printer.

Now select the printer :

select-printer

Then, choose the driver – (in most cases, default will be correct)

choose-driver

Next, Give printer a descriptive name and location – it help you to identify the printer. Finally, click on Apply to install the appropriate driver.

step #3. Now the installation is complete. print a test page or something else (useful, like a cheatsheet for something) to test.

That’s All – Now you can start printing cool photos with Ubuntu! Sometimes if the driver is not available or the above process doesn’t work – then don’t be panic. You can download the specific driver (*.deb package or a tar archive) manually from the official site of your printer manufacturer.

  1. If the Canon printer model in NOT in the Ubuntu list of printers then it is almost nightmare.
Ubuntu seem to have no capability to FIND the appropriate printer from the Internet and download and install
    the printer driver.
For example I have canon M4350d Image class printer and Ubuntu can NOT find the driver and I can NOT print.

    1. You need to look for and download the driver from the web by yourself,

put the downloaded file in a separate directory,

extract the files in the very same directory (you should see a PPD file showing up after the extraction)

in the / system settings / printer / add / new printer / choose driver menu / select radio button “Provide PPD file” and in the appearing box go select the PPD file previously extracted. It worked flawless for me using an OKI printer. (I had more problem installing it on win 7)

  2. Hi,

Thanks for sharing this tut. I didn’t actually need it but I thought I would just share my experience anyway. All I did was plug my printer in and it installed itself! And yeah, it was only a few seconds later I was printing out .pdfs. I have a “Brother HL-2132” printer so yeah… Go Ubuntu + Brother Printers!

    1. Thanks John, for sharing your experience. Sometimes Ubuntu detects the printer automatically, selects the appropriate driver and installation is completed without any hassle but sometimes it may cause a little pain (as in my case – i was using Cannon Printer).

  3. I have a Canon Pixma MP160 and did a recent upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 and my printer installed with it but it goes through the stages to print but never does and when I click on the printer it says status: stopped. Don’t really know what to do?

  4. It is very heartening to note that more and more Indians are writing about open source (nothing chauvinistic as the web is open to all). It is my belief that computer literacy in developing world can be spread much faster with open source and the benefits reaped by very much larger numbers of users, developers and other IT professionals as compared to proprietary OS. Carry on, Shri Jha, for the benefit of all.

  5. I was trying to install my Canon Pixma MP-160 Printer Driver for Ubuntu with terminal but was worthless. Then I read this and helped me a lot. Thanks!!!!

  6. What to do if your printer is not on the list? For instance I have the Canon Pixma MX455 what am I supposed to do?

  7. No driver for the Canon I6550 (fails during download), it sets the driver for the I6500 which gets all the colours wrong so pretty useless for me (and any other Canon i6550 pixma owners. Cyan and Yellow are right, but the magenta/red prints grey. Also is can’t print higher than 600×600 DPI. Will keep trying though as Windows 7 froze and lost the login UI so I cant even get into safe mode, so Linux is my only option.

  8. Thanks a lot. all i need to do is just connect the printer, download the driver and it works in my Canon iP2770.

  9. Thanks a lot, works with my Hp wirless D110 printer, on ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
