Introduction
If you have ever used the Google Earth,the virtual globe/map(3D Planet viewer),online or as a desktop application in windows or Mac then don’t worry!! it’s available for Linux based OS like Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat)/10.04(Lucid Lynx),Open Suse…etc.Google earth was originally developed by Keyhole Inc(A software development company,CEO : Johne Hanke),but later Google acquired it(in 2004) and renamed it as Google Earth.Now a lot of applications provided by Google is based on google earth.

Since Google Earth downloads the data instantly(from the internet during use) so high speed internet connection is required for seamless experience.it has a lot of features like sky mode,street view,water and ocean,historical imagery,flight simulator etc and new features has been added frequently.API is also available openly so Google earth can be customized according to the need.

Recommended System Configuration for GNU/Linux

  • Kernel 2.6 or later
  • glibc 2.3.5 w/ NPTL or later
  • x.org R6.7 or later
  • System Memory (RAM): 512MB
  • Hard Disk: 2GB free space
  • Network Speed: 768 Kbits/sec
  • Graphics Card: DirectX9 and 3D capable with 256MB of VRAM

Installing Google Earth on Ubuntu 10.10

#1 : Open Synaptic Package Manager(System->Administration->SPM).

#2 : Then search for ‘google earth’ in quick search bar and mark the package for installation.Don’t forget to mark the additional packages(dependencies) when prompted.

#3 : next,click on Apply to begin the installation packages…..wait for few minutes.You are Done!

#4 : Now you can start Google Earth from the Application Menu or from command line.
